Art and Design Statement of Intent:

"To give our children the opportunity to be involved in, enjoy, understand and appreciate the visual arts and enable them to build the creative skills needed to reach their full potential using the language of art."

Our Art and Design Curriculum

Our Art and Design curriculum is ambitious and inspires pupils to develop their artistic skills and knowledge and leaves them curious to find out more. We believe Art is an avenue for children to explore their curiosity, express themselves imaginatively, develop critical thinking skills, invent and craft works of art, develop an interest in great artists and develop skills: drawing, painting, working with colour, textiles, sculpting and creating ideas. Our aim is to have an engaging Art curriculum that is bespoke for our community. Our curriculum inspires our pupils to be brave with colour, material and mediums to create high quality physical and visual art pieces. Through the curriculum our pupils will enjoy learning about great artists and critique their work to gain a deep understanding of different types of art. Our Art curriculum enables pupils to be creative and injects a love for art.

Art & Design Showcase

Summer Term 24/25 Workshops

Throughout the summer term, the whole school have been taking part in a range of exciting art workshops. In F1 and F2 the children were exploring photography to create artwork from nature. Throughout the workshop, the children experimented with using a variety of angles to take interesting and creative photographs of the natural world and questioned how this can be viewed as art.  In Year 1 and 2 the children explored the modern printmaking technique of emulsion printing, inspired by their curriculum theme of Pop Art. They created a piece of work inspired by some of the key features of pop artworks! In LKS2 the children explored creating paint from natural pigments just like the ancient Egyptians did! Finally, in LKS2 the children experienced creating traditional Viking wire weaving techniques. The workshops have been a success and the children has a great time creating and experimenting with their creative abilities.

Summer Term 24/25 - Year 5/6

In Year 5/6 have been exploring the challenging question 'Is it better to create or destroy?' Drawing inspiration from the Vikings, the children designed and crafted intricate brooches out of salt dough. These unique creations were displayed for parents in a special secret auction, raising awareness of equality and equity. The brooches were also showcased in the school hall, giving younger year groups the opportunity to admire and critique the work, before later being exhibited more widely at Sutton Library. Alongside this, the children immersed themselves in an AR experience of a Viking settlement and welcomed a Viking expert into school, who shared knowledge and celebrated their creative achievements.

Summer Term 24/25 - Year 3/4

In Year 3/4 we have stepped back in time to explore the fascinating world of Ancient Egypt. The children investigated Egyptian art and used clay to create their own scarab beetle jewellery pieces, inspired by the intricate patterns and vibrant colours of the time. The adventure began with a special Hook Day, where pupils dressed as Egyptians and became archaeologists for the day. Just like Howard Carter, they carefully uncovered treasures buried in the sand, experiencing the excitement of discovery first-hand. To celebrate their learning, the children hosted an exhibition to showcase their artwork and share their knowledge with the wider community. They also welcomed a local charity into school, raising money for a good cause and showing how history can inspire positive change today!

Summer Term 24/25 - Year 1/2

In Year 1 and 2 have been exploring the big question 'How can we make our mark?' The children investigated how artists express themselves and discovered the bold, colourful world of Pop Art. Inspired by Andy Warhol, they created striking self-portraits that celebrated individuality and creativity. To share their achievements, the children hosted an exhibition for the local community, proudly displaying their artwork. They even raised money by selling their creations, showing that their art can make a difference both in school and beyond.

Summer Term 24/25 - EYFS

Our youngest learners in EYFS have been exploring the question 'Is art all around us?' Their journey began with a special Hook Day, where the children planted their own flowers and plants, taking responsibility for caring for them as they grew. Inspired by their plants, the children learned about Van Gogh’s famous Sunflowers and then created their very own artwork, using their observations to make each piece unique and personal. To celebrate their creativity, they proudly showcased their masterpieces in a school art gallery, inviting parents to admire the wonderful display of colour, imagination, and inspiration drawn from the natural world around them.
