MFL

MFL Statement of Intent:

"To develop creative and confident communication within another language, understanding and responding verbally and in written form, with increasing fluency and ambition."

Children are taught Spanish weekly in short-burst, 30minute sessions. These lessons focus primarily on the acquisition of speaking and listening skills, whilst also incorporating opportunities to develop reading and writing abilities.

Our approach to learning a language puts emphasis on a fun, relaxed atmosphere where praise is given to all abilities and children feel confident to push their limits.

Mediums such as ICT, games, flash cards and cultural exposure are consistently used to support children in their learning.

Spanish language is embedded across the entire school. Target language phrases are incorporated within the school day and used by class teachers to take the register, dinner register, basic instructions and positive praise.

Through high quality, language rich lessons, children begin to develop an understanding of a second language and its grammatical structure. As a result, learners inevitably become more aware of, and develop a deeper understanding their own language.

"We have been learning about different adjectives and how we can use them to describe nouns. In Spanish, they go in a different order to English. The nouns go before the adjective"

"We have been revisiting our familiar vocabulary of different greetings, colours and family members. We used our Key vocabulary flashcards to help us remember the important grammar from our lesson".

Christmas in Spain - virtual exchange

F2 took part in a Spanish day, where they were taught about life in Spain to develop their learning of knowledge of other cultures. They began by tasting Spanish tapas. All children watched a paso-doble performance before joining in, then practised Spanish greetings with their peers.

Year 3 and 4 - Yo y mi familia

We have been using bilingual dictionaries to describe ourselves and our families.

Next, we wrote a short paragraph to describe our likes and dislikes using adjectives.

We then practised our speaking and listening skills by sharing our writing with our peers.
