Enquiry Question: Who is Significant?

Our Learning Journey:
Week 1:
This week we introduced our curriculum enquiry question ‘Who is significant?’.
we talked about what the word ‘significant’ meant and discussed who is significant in our lives.
The children were invited to come to school dressed as somebody significant.
Week 2:
This week we thought about people in our lives who are significant to us.
The children then drew some pictures of people who they believe to be significant.
Week 3:
This week we introduced the children to Robin Hood. We talked about how he used to live in Sherwood Forest and that he came from Nottingham.
We read a story about him and then the children had a go at drawing a picture of Robin Hood.
Week 4:
This week we continued our learning about Robin Hood. We discussed why Robin Hood was significant.
We talked about how he helped people by taking from the rich and giving to the poor. We also learned that he came from our local area.
Week 5:
This week we have been learning about Florence Nightingale and why she is significant. We talked about her role as a nurse and how she improved hospitals all over the world. We know that International Nurses Day is celebrated on her birthday.
Week 6:
This week we have been learning about Captain Albert Ball and why he is significant. We talked about his role in the First World War and how he was a pilot. We know that he flew a fighter plane and he was also from Nottingham!
The children have settled in so well and have worked so hard this term and we are excited to continue our learning after half term! 🙂
Week 7:
This week we learned about what it means if something happens in the past. We then had a think about significant things that have happened in the past and drew a picture to show these significant events.
Week 8:
This week we revisited some of the significant people we have learned about. We then decided if we thought the people were from the past or were in the present.
Week 9:
This week we learnt about Guy Fawkes and how he was a significant person but for bad reason. We then drew pictures of people who were significant for a good reason and a bad reason and explained why they were significant.
Week 10:
This week we created a video to articulate who we thought was significant and why. We also drew a picture of the significant person, ensuring we included facial features. We presented our video to our local MP, Lee Anderson and he shared his thoughts on significant people in the local community.

Enquiry Question: What Makes Britain Great?

Our learning Journey:
Week 1:
This week we introduced our curriculum enquiry question ‘What makes Britain great?’
We talked about where we live and some of the different places within Sutton we know about e.g the library. The children drew somewhere they had visited in Sutton. Ada drew her house.
Week 2:
This week we depend our understanding about where we live. We looked at a World map and then found Europe. We talked about the United Kingdom and which countries where part of it.
Week 3:
This week we are learning about what a capital city is. We know that a capital city is where the Government are. London is the capital city of England. We sorted pictures of London and Sutton.
Week 4:
This week we learned what ‘population’ means. Over 30,000 people live in Sutton. Sutton is a town. More people live in cities. There are over 9 million people living in London.
Week 5:
This week we have been learning about the famous British artist Lowry. We know that he only used 5 colours in his work, he only used flat shapes and painted matchstick people.
Week 6:
This week, we continued our learning about Lowry and had a go at creating artwork inspired by him. We used 5 colours that Lowry used to recreate a whole class Lowry inspired scene. We talked about flat shapes and colours.
Week 7:
This week, we had a Spanish afternoon. We ate some Spanish tapas, learnt some Spanish language, made a Spanish flag and did some Paso Doble dancing. We also learnt some facts about Spain.
Week 8:
This week, we have learnt about the Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso. We looked at faces artwork and discussed the colours and composition of the facial features before creating our own.
Week 9:
This week, we learnt that different countries have different languages. We know that people in England usually speak English and people in Spain usually speak Spanish. We learnt some Spanish phrases.
Week 10:
This week concludes our Spring enquiry. We put together a video to share with a local travel agent to share all our knowledge about Great Britain so that they can share it with their customers. Scan the QR code to see!
