Curriculum Journey for Year 5/6
Summer 2024
Enquiry Question: What Does African Art Teach Us?
View our knowledge organiser here
During our art topic this term, we delved into the fascinating world of African art. To kick off our journey, we invited local artist Paul Lillie, who created an African-inspired artwork and shared his techniques with us. We recorded our observations and thoughts in sketchbooks, learning about the significance of patterns, symbols, and colours in African art. We studied the contrasting styles of artists Joseph Thiongo and Rafiy Okefolahan, practicing their techniques in our own sketches. Our exploration included drawing natural and man-made patterns, planning our artworks, and experimenting with watercolours and acrylics. We shared and refined our drafts based on peer feedback, ultimately creating final pieces that embodied African culture. Our term concluded with evaluations of our work and a double page spread summarizing our learning. We were excited to present our art canvases at the Summer Assembly and silent auction, celebrating our creative journey and appreciation for African art.
