Autumn Curriculum Journey for KS1 2023-24
Week 1
In week one we learnt all about how our world is very different now from what it was like in the past.
We had an immersive Victorian Day where we experienced school life in the past and made comparisons to our school life at Mapplewells.
Week 2
In week 2 we learnt about how we know about the past and the different types of sources we can get information from.
Week 3
In week 2 we learnt about our first significant person from the past, Queen Victoria. We learnt all about her and her reign as the Queen of England.
Week 4
In week 4 we continue to look at Queen Victoria but we thought about how she made her impact on the world. We learnt about the laws she put into place to ensure it was compulsory for children to go to school and discussed how this had impacted our lives today.
Week 5
In week 5 We learnt all about another influential and significant person from the past, Florence Nightingale. We created a fact file about her life and discovered the wonderful things she did for the nursing profession.
Week 6
In week 6, we made comparisons between nursing during the Victorian era and today. We thought about the positive impact Florence Nightingale had on nursing and how she changed the world for the better.
Week 7
In week 7, we learnt about Rosa Parks and the bus boycott. We thought about how she fought for equal rights for everyone and stood up for what she believed in.
Week 8
In week 8, we learnt about a significant lady called Emmeline Pankhurst who was part of a group called the Suffragettes. They protested and fought for equal rights for women. To understand this, girls were given 2 full pages of handwriting while the boys got to enjoy colouring. We quickly recognised that this wasn't fair and understood why Emmeline Pankhurst wanted to make a change.
Week 9
In week 9, we continued to learn about Emmeline Pankhurst and created our own protest placards. We discussed how their actions meant that women today can achieve anything they want to.
Week 10
During our final enquiry lesson, we created a double page spread to share everything we have learnt during the Autumn term and answer our enquiry question 'Who changed the world for me?'
