Reading Incentives
Reading Incentives at Mapplewells
The number of times that a child reads is important to us at Mapplewells, as we believe that every child should be given the means and motive to become a lifelong reader. There is an expectation through school that each child should be reading at least 3 times per week which is recorded in reading diaries. This has been derived in consultation with parents through questionnaires and feedback.
The number of times that a child has read each week and had this recorded in their reading diaries/learning organisers and the number of reads is collated weekly by class teachers. Collective rewards and incentives are given to promote this: for every read that a child undertakes at home, they will receive 1 point for their class. On a Thursday during our Star of the Week assembly, the class with the most reads will be rewarded with 5 minutes extra playtime. For every 3 reads that a child undertakes at home, they will receive a raffle ticket. Within each class, a raffle ticket will be pulled out each week and that child will win a reading associated prize.
Alongside these, we also have other incentives to promote reading at Mapplewells. Rise and Shine reading is held twice a week on a Tuesday and Friday from 8:30am until 8:45am, giving children the opportunity to bring their parents into their classroom and sit and read for 15 minutes before the start of the school day.
